The CENT-R is a Rotterdam invention, representing Connective Energy Network Tool-Rotterdam. Born from collaboration between the city and lighting expert Lightwell, the CENT-R takes a unique approach to address issues in existing "smart lighting." Its modular design, compatible with various cities and applications, allows users to choose modules, ranging from electric vehicle charging points and AEDs to gateways for networks like LoRaWAN™.
LoRaWAN™ is a relatively new technology utilizing energy-efficient long-distance communication to enhance efficiency and range in data communication. With LoRaWAN™ modules on the CENT-R, coverage in suburbs is simplified. Even one gateway in an ideal location can cover an area of +/- 75 km2. Skylab utilizes The Things Network, the world's largest and fastest-growing LoRaWAN™ network.
By connecting gateways, sensor data is securely sent back to dashboards. The Things Network is free, open for use, and encrypts data for privacy. Skylab, in collaboration with infrastructure and hosting provider Intermax, expands the LoRaWAN network in Rotterdam, contributing to the collection of relevant data. Dozens of gateways are already installed at strategic locations in the region.
In addition to the potential of new technologies, existing applications provide significant benefits for cities. The CENT-R, alongside Tizin and Guard-Litec, addresses lighting issues by remotely detecting faulty streetlights. Skylab has already implemented bridge sensors in the Netherlands, providing insights into bridge usage for maintenance and societal benefit. The LoRaWAN™ network has numerous applications for businesses and industries, enabling asset tracking and route insights. Bringing LoRaWAN™ gateways to more areas and expanding coverage has many advantages for social and economic purposes. The integration of LoRaWAN™ gateways in the CENT-R and elsewhere fosters innovation and provides more insights. For collaboration and information on usage scenarios, contact us.
